''Fire Lance''
The First Gun
The first gun invented is the “Fire Lance”. The Fire Lance appeared in China between the 10 – 12th centuries and was used in the “Jing-Song Wars”. ‘Fire Spear’ was a gun powder weapon and the direct ancestor of modern firearms that paved the way for further improvements. While Chinese alchemists were actually seeking the elixir of immortality they accidentally discovered the volatile and explosive elements of black powder.
It began as a small pyrotechnic device attached to a polearm weapon, used to gain a shock advantage at the start of a commotion.
They constructed simple explosives such as fire arrows, combining bamboo tube containing gun powder and projectiles tied to a Chinese spear. They were cheap and popular for several centuries, sometimes being used in racks to defend cities and remained in use until well after the Ming period. The development of gunpowder in the fire lance to have enough force to hurl a killing projectile was a key step along the development of the first true guns.
Imagine using this in today’s century!
